During the Vietnam War certain parties wanted the war to continue while others simply wanted it to end right then and there. Clearly, the artist of this political cartoon wanted to see the soldiers withdraw. The cartoon depicts a giant swirling mass with “Vietnam, Thailand, Still deeper involvement with Asia” written spiraling down. The United States is shown as Uncle Sam in a rickety row boat swirling down while fishing out “Still deeper involvement with Asia.” Essentially, what this cartoon means is that if we continue to be involved with Vietnam, the involvement will progress to affairs with the rest of Asia. This artist sees it as a simple cause and effect situation. If we continue this way he foresees we will fall into that spiral pit.
